Strategies to overcome failing in 12th
1. Repeat, Reappear and Recover
Time is on your side but as Hrishikesh aptly said, “Never run away from your fear”. Avoiding examinations is impossible but you do have an extra year or two to regroup and correct your mistakes the second time around.
You could:
Repeat again from Class 11: This is the answer to the question, ‘Can I repeat class 12 after failing?’. You could reappear for the classroom courses from class 11 and attend the 12th board exams and pass with flying colours.
Do a Diploma: Diploma’s differ from a standard bachelor’s degree in that you have to only attend one subject and the completion of the course is in 6 months to 1 year. You could get a diploma in subjects such as Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering. Diplomas require only a 10th standard pass certificate and marksheet.
Sign up for an ITI Course: As with the diploma, Industrial Training Institute’s(ITI) course structure is more job oriented than a diploma or bachelor’s degree. It offers:
- Practical knowledge and an off-desk job
- A course duration based on the subject of choice and could vary from 6 months, 1 year to 2 years.
An ITI course has a minimum age limit of 14 years and a maximum age limit of 40 years and typically begins in July. Applicants can get jobs in fields such as bleaching and dying, art, civil engineering and dressmaking among other areas.
Pass the CBSEs compartment examination: CBSEs compartment examination is an opportunity to appear for those examinations that the student has failed in. It generally takes place a month or two after the class 12 board exam results have been announced. However, if you have failed more than two subjects, you will be ineligible to take CBSE’s compartment examination. So, CBSE can not fail a student in 12th.
Patrachar Vidyalaya: The Patrachar Vidyalaya is an open school of learning where the student can skip the class year and directly appear for the 12th year board examination. Meanwhile, he can take up coaching provided by Patrachar Vidyalaya and is provided with a certificate the same as that of CBSE.
NIOS(National Institute of Open Schooling): And appear for NIOSs board examinations. NIOS allows you to skip classroom training and train from home. You can get admission to any university after completing NIOS. The exams can be taken at any point in the year and admissions to the board are 24*7. If you have passed three or more subjects, you get an NIOS certificate.
Choose NIOS on-demand examination(ODE): ODE allows you to save a year by appearing for the exam at any time of the calendar year. You can have a walk-in into the examination centre at any time of the year and attend the exam.
2. Get Ready for Entrance Examinations
There are various courses and entrance examinations you can attend that do not require a 12th board exam result. So do not worry if you have failed in 12th. You could go into fashion designing, become a flight attendant, mass communication, go into arts such as acting, music, become a model, a dietician or a gym trainer. The list is endless.
IIT Bombay and IIIT Jabalpur are two institutes that allow you to take its design program without a prerequisite PCM in the 12th year. Renowned universities like Delhi University and Indraprastha University offer courses that do not require a 12th board exam result.

The year off is an opportunity to grow your skill set and develop strengths that will aid your journey in the future. Obtaining skills that are relevant in todays job market is invaluable and with time on your hand, you can spend it wisely.
